Today is National Password Day. A once-a-year nudge to check the digital locks on your inbox, your bank, and everything in between. Most of us will think about passwords for about three seconds and then carry on. That’s fine. Three seconds is enough to do something about it.

Here are five quick wins. Pick one, pick all five. Each takes two minutes or less.

  1. Update your most-reused passwords
Think about the password you’ve typed the most this week. The one you’ve been using since 2017. Change it – and change it everywhere. Reused passwords are how a single breach cascades into half your online life.
If you don’t have a vault yet, this is a good moment to start one. Pick something safer than your notes app.
  2. Turn on two-factor authentication
For the accounts that actually matter – email, bank, primary social – turn on 2FA today. It’s the single biggest jump in security you can make in 60 seconds. Most major sites offer it under your account security settings.
  3. Run a password audit
Open your password manager and look for the warnings. Duplicates, weak ones, or old passwords. Most password managers (mSecure included, via the Security Center) will flag these for you in seconds.
Knock out the top three. The rest can wait until next month.
  4. Try a passkey
Passkeys are the long-term replacement for passwords – you sign in with your device’s biometric instead of typing anything. Apple, Google, Microsoft, and a growing list of major sites now support them.
Pick one site you use a lot, see if it offers passkeys sign-in, and switch over. It’s a small step today, and a much smaller daily login forever.
  5. Make sure your vault is set up the way it should be
If you’ve been on the free plan, today’s a good day to take stock. mSecure Essentials unlocks cloud sync across your devices and biometric lock.

One day a year is enough

You don’t have to overhaul your digital life today. You don’t even have to do all five of these. Pick one and do it before you close this tab. Future-you will thank present-you for the ten minutes.
